ABSTRACT

Communicating is more than one-way transmission of information. It is a complex process which involves the exchange of messages and their meanings. Definitions and models of the communication process have been plentiful and like the models and theories of organisation and management which have been considered earlier many of them offer valuable insights to the practising education manager. Nevertheless it is difficult fully to capture the concept in a single definition because of its elusiveness and variability. Systems thinking also pays particular attention to environmental factors, to the context in which communication takes place. Three major internal elements act upon the communication subsystem of a typical school- group influences, task characteristics and climate. The effectiveness of communication depends to a considerable extent on a favourable climate in the school. Open and accurate communication will be easier when relationships are good and there is a prevailing high level of trust.
