ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to animate the world in which the Beaugencys lived. Examination will start with the more intimate spaces the lords and ladies inhabited and then move out to consider the wider world around them. The chapter describes the physical setting of the village of Beaugency. At the heart of Beaugency, three very important structures and spaces that lie almost on top of the other: A castle, churches and large squares that served as a market place. Each of these spaces represents an important slice of medieval society. Castles served many functions. They were a tangible sign of a lord's power, but also where courts and banquets were held, justice provided and order implemented. An important part of any medieval community was the church. The market places at Beaugency hosted two types of economic exchange: Weekly markets and regional fairs.
