ABSTRACT

Known prints, also called exemplars, are intentional reproductions of fingerprints and/or palm prints in powder, ink, or a digital medium. Known prints serve as a record of identity. They are compared with prints of unknown origin (latent prints) in order to determine whether they originated from the same source. Exemplars are also used to determine whether an individual has a prior arrest record and to serve as a reference for subsequent latent and tenprint searches. Comprehensive exemplars ensure that latent and tenprint searches are productive. In the laboratory exercises that follow, inked and powdered exemplar prints are collected and analyzed.
