ABSTRACT

Biometrics are biological measurements that are unique to individuals and can therefore be used for identification purposes. Examples of forensic biometrics include fingerprint analysis, DNA analysis, and facial recognition. Fingerprints are the most common biometric used as criminal records and forensic evidence. Fingerprint examiners utilize the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) to store, search, and analyze latent prints and exemplars. Latent print examiners and tenprint examiners are responsible for verifying AFIS “hits.” The exercises in this chapter explore how AFIS functions as well as the various biometrics used for personal identification.
