ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a vision which can provide an understanding of the operating context for education, a vision that both reveals directions for choice and inspires with energy for action. Education, in the realm, is concerned with empowering learners to exploit the potentialities of reasoning in their own or others' interests, or to meet whatever needs or priorities they may have. In a world of time and space the spiritual insight cannot ignore the rational and the holistic. Any vision of education would, in the view, need to reflect the relationship of the ideal to sensory or empirical reality. The rational, the holistic and the spiritual faculties can be thought of as residing, respectively, in the mind, heart and spirit. The essential activity of the spirit is faith, in the sense that, without the constant act of consent to believe, the spiritual would effectively disappear from consciousness.
