ABSTRACT

The National Autistic Society, the Royal College of GPs and the University College London Institute of Education, published research in the Autism journal, which asked people on the autism spectrum, their families, friends and professionals about the preferred language used to describe autism. The National Autistic Society believe that this research shows that language preferences are evolving, and that they will continue to research and test how different groups prefer to speak about autism. Relationships and Sex Education for autistic learners will ideally increase their knowledge and understanding of their changing bodies and growing into adulthood, gender differences and similarities, public and private places and activities, relationships, sexual health and parenthood. Autistic individuals, parents and professionals agree that issues related to sexuality, sexual health and understanding different types of relationships can be particularly confusing and stressful, because the subtleties of relationships are challenging in themselves.
