ABSTRACT
Being a qualitative data analyst is a herculean responsibility. You are sometimes viewed as the voice of participants, a curious thinker who systematically explores all possible explanations to an observation, a vessel through which creative ideas are brought to light, and a communicator who presents convincing evidence to support your claims. You could effectively play these roles in the data analysis process if you have a better understanding of the art of qualitative coding. This chapter will provide a simplified explanation of qualitative analysis, information on what the art of coding involves, and three main qualitative coding strategies. I’ll be using interview data created to demonstrate how the strategies are used to code data.
