ABSTRACT

Out of our intensive interaction with data, we generate codes to represent relevant statements identified. The codes shouldn’t only reflect the statements in the data but should also address the research questions or meet the purpose of the study. This chapter provides a guide on how to decide on an appropriate coding strategy considering the type of qualitative research approach, nature of the research questions and content of the data. I will use interview data from the research project on GM crops to demonstrate the coding process. Lastly, I will provide a simple guide on manual coding using Microsoft Word.
