ABSTRACT

Log file analysis involves collecting, storing, searching and analysing log file data. Log files are a list of events that have been recorded, or logged, by a computer or mobile device. Log file analysis is also used in health research: F. Sieverink et al. illustrate how log file analysis can help to improve electronic personal health records and S. Kelders et al. use a mixed methods approach, including log file analysis, to evaluate a web-based intervention designed to help people maintain a healthy body weight. There are various log file analysis tools available. Although functions vary, depending on the chosen software and the purpose of the analysis, in general, researchers are able to collect, store, index, search, correlate, visualize, analyse and report data from log files. There are a variety of digital tools and software packages available for log file analysis.
