ABSTRACT

Mobile phone surveys are used to collect data about thoughts, opinions, attitudes, behaviour and feelings. They can be used to investigate hypotheses and test theory, to understand and describe a particular phenomenon, or for exploratory purposes, for example. Mobile phone surveys are a methodology rather than a method. Mobile phones provide the opportunity to undertake survey research that reaches a large amount of people, crosses geographical boundaries and enables connections to be made at any time in any place. There are a wide variety of software packages, tools and apps available for designing, administering and analysing mobile phone questionnaires for survey research. It is important to note, however, that a good knowledge and understanding of survey research and questionnaire design, construction and analysis is important for any researcher considering undertaking a mobile phone survey.
