ABSTRACT

Digital objects are sequences of units of data that exist on a particular medium. They include properties and methods. Some of these are born digital, originating as digital objects, whereas others are digitised, presenting and recording attributes and characteristics of physical objects. ‘Digital consumption objects’ is a term that has been used to refer specifically to personal objects that exist in the digital space such as personal photographs, social network profiles, wish lists, playlists, avatars, text messages and blogs, for example. ‘Digital cultural objects’ refers to objects that have been created by humans that are preserved digitally. Researching digital objects is carried out in a number of disciplines and fields of study including library and information science, information retrieval, digital curation and preservation, art history, the humanities, the social sciences, computer sciences, education and media studies. Digital objects can be identified by a persistent identifier or handle called a Digital Object Identifier.
