ABSTRACT

Wearables are computational devices and/or digital sensors that are worn on the body, used to track and digitise human activity and/or behaviour. They can be worn as hats, badges, waistbands, armbands, around the neck, in eyeglasses, embedded into textiles, or in other devices such as smartphones, headphones or wristwatches, for example. Wearables are used to sense environmental, behavioural, physiological and/or psychological phenomena from the user or from the environment in which they are worn. The user can receive processed information in the form of alerts, feedback, visual or textual content, and can interact with wearables via the gateway. Wearables are used in the social and behavioural sciences to measure and interpret social behaviour. In health and medicine they are used to monitor health and provide detailed insight into health behaviour and risks, help to improve quality of life, improve drug treatment and monitor disease and treatment.
