ABSTRACT

Effective execution of the organization’s strategy requires a well-organized and consistently implemented reporting methodology to maintain an organization-wide focus on the strategy. Regular reporting also creates accountability and provides an opportunity for managers to express appreciation when performance levels are high and encourage a renewal of effort when performance levels are low. This chapter focuses on two primary reporting methods, the balanced scorecard and the operational dashboard. An important aspect of reporting is to remember that the reporting process is never used to punish, reprimand, or place blame. Reporting is part of the metrics process, which is used to drive performance and stimulate ideal behaviors. The balanced scorecard is a strategic management tool for reporting the performance of organization or division based on a select few business metrics. A well-designed balanced scorecard should communicate concisely all the necessary information. The operational dashboard will contain more objectives, goals, and action items than the few, high-level items contained in the balanced scorecard.
