ABSTRACT

First, writing in role is described as a composition technique in which empirical materials such as field notes are written from the participant’s point of view to enhance the qualitative researcher’s empathy and understanding. Next, two representative pieces are included that illustrate writing in role. “All I Really Need to Know About Qualitative Research I Learned in High School: The 2016 Qualitative High Graduation Commencement Address” is a keynote written from the perspective of an 18-year-old high school valedictorian. The second selection, “Blue-Collar Qualitative Research: A Rant,” takes the perspective of an angry redneck ranting at the pretentiousness of academic scholarship.
