ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book focuses on mastery teaching outlines model of how to structure a more mixed approach with a part lesson including formative pre-assessment; open and collaborative ‘anchor’ tasks’ and journaling; more traditional instruction and practice; and an individual assessment task. The primary essence of lesson study is to develop the pedagogical understanding of teachers, and develop general understanding about teaching and learning, through studying and implementing a lesson or lessons. The openness of problems is very helpful in moving away from the anxiety inducing right or wrongness of much mathematics education, which can lead many students to develop a fear of being wrong, looking stupid and even being ridiculed by their peers or teacher.
