ABSTRACT

Cooking is so empowering for children, giving them the ability to work from start to finish to make something real and purposeful. The Schools, Pre-Schools and Nurseries involved in the project noticed many benefits from introducing cooking into their provision. One of the biggest benefits was the impact on communication and language as well as personal and social skills. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) recipes are an introduction to this, with the children creating their own products but sharing ingredients and equipment. As adults it is easy to step in and set rules for sharing but it is of far more value to allow children the opportunity to do this. They will often spend a long time debating and if left to, they will often work out a fair outcome which pleases all. The chapter also presents an overview on the key concepts discussed in this book.
