ABSTRACT

Lindenholt is a district within Nijmegen, a town in the east of the Netherlands with about 145,000 inhabitants. The initiative for new housing developments comes from the municipality itself, based on its house building programmes. Nijmegen has been building actively since the Second World War, and in 1965 crossed a high threshold by starting to build on the other side of the Maas–Waal canal. When the plans were being made, the housing survey carried out in the city region showed a strong movement out of Nijmegen into surrounding towns and villages. On the other hand, it was central government policy that urbanization should be concentrated. The plan for Lindenholt-West was approved by the provincial executive in May 1978. The municipality had considered Lindenholt to be an expansion area long before plan-making started, and as early as 1969 had begun to acquire land there.
