ABSTRACT

The transportation sector globally has been generating over one fifth, about 23 per cent, of the energy-related greenhouse gas emissions of the world. This has been mainly due to the fact that oil fuels, especially gasoline and diesel, have been the dominant transport fuels being used globally. Government policy supports to improve the sustainability of the transport sector have traditionally occurred in two key areas, which include improving energy efficiency and expanding the use of biofuels in road transport. Biofuels for road transport have been the priority area for government policy supports in some key countries. Municipal policy makers from leading cities across the world have been playing increasingly important roles in promoting the use of renewable energy in their cities. More and more policy makers at the local city and municipal level have been setting new targets and enacting policies to promote clean renewables energy in their cities and towns.
