ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the theoretical foundations for editorial decisions while stressing the creative aspects of the editorial process. A brief survey of historical developments in editing techniques introduces Russian montage and classical cutting and provides groundwork for a discussion of edit styles and conventions. Students gain an understanding of the universal features of video editing systems so that they have conceptual knowledge, no matter what software they are using. This chapter provides a skill base for students to begin building their first visual program in postproduction.
