ABSTRACT

This chapter guides students though the creative options and tools for recording and editing sound in video production. The chapter begins with an overview of how we perceive sound, followed by a review of microphones and their characteristics. Microphone selection and placement is examined as well as a range of popular microphone accessories. The chapter then covers critical technical considerations for ensuring quality sound recording. The reader learns about the members of sound recording team in film and video production and their job functions. The chapter explores challenges of sound recording in the field and techniques for managing sound on location. The chapter ends with an examination of the role of sound in postproduction, including sound editing and mixing.
