ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with a review of important considerations for working with light in video production, including controlling the amount, direction, quality, and color of lights. The chapter begins with an overview of popular lighting instruments and how to use these instruments in lighting designs, including three- and four-point lighting. Students explore the concept of contrast ratios and challenges of managing color temperature and working in mixed lighting situations. Additional tools for lighting design, including light meters, external monitors, and various types of filters, are discussed. The chapter offers considerations for power and safety and introduces the reader to the members of the lighting crew. The chapter examines the unique challenges encountered when lighting outdoors and concludes with creative approaches to consider when lighting for film and video.
