ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the business side of both short form and feature production. Understanding the media industry is essential to students of video production as they progress in their studies and learn how to approach a career at a studio or corporation or as an independent content creator. A brief history of the motion picture industry provides insights into the business of motion pictures. The chapter focuses on how short- and long-form fiction programs are designed and produced. In addition to reviewing crew positions, this chapter expands on the fundamental production planning tools, including script breakdowns, shot lists, storyboards, and call sheets, and includes budgeting and financing as the framework to raise the financing for a project.
