ABSTRACT

The following episode exposes how the personal animosity between Consul Brant and governor Halil Pasha came into being following the January–February events. Throughout January 1851 Halil Pasha filed three complaints against Benjamin Barker, John Werry, and Consul Brant, striving to impose new order in his province. On 3 February, Consul Brant moved from defense to offense, targeting the governor and Bekir Aga. Halil Pasha and Brant tried to recruit their governments’ support in their struggle. On 9 January, just three days after the police operation in Buca, Halil Pasha submitted an official complaint to Consul Brant over Benjamin Barker’s conduct during the police operation. On 31 January, Consul Brant was informed by Halil Pasha that the trial of Stavri Theodori would take place before the new criminal council on the following day. On 28 February 1851, Consul Brant wrote Ambassador Canning an apologetic response to the complaint brought against him by the governor, with regard to his behavior in court.
