ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part looks at how to gather relevant and key information from an assessment and draw this together into a formulation that is useful for the client and their aims. It provides some tips and ideas on how to share a formulation in a manner that is clear, coherent, and meaningful. The part outlines some of the central techniques that are used in acceptance & commitment therapy to move the processes that support psychological flexibility. This includes suggestions about useful metaphors and exercises to use that are both engaging and effective. The part considers how to more broadly organise the overarching flow of sessions so that it shapes important processes identified in the formulation, such that intervention moves forward usefully.
