ABSTRACT

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy is a structured intervention, so it is no surprise that a degree of structure is brought to each individual session itself. This structure can come from multiple sources. The first source is the client’s particular goals and needs and this will focus and direct what the intervention will look like. The second source is how the session plan is developed at the start of each session. This typically involves some sort of agenda setting or discussion as each session begins. Providing structure ensures that the session time is used meaningfully to move towards the client’s goals. The degree of structure needs to match the client’s needs and therefore should be flexibly adapted.
