ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part draws on experience of training and supervising others in the practice of Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT). It considers the therapeutic stance that ACT takes within the broader context of modern healthcare delivery and the cultures in which we live. This is related to its scientific and philosophical position, although also impacts upon the spirit and attitude that it is important for practitioners to take into their work. The part addresses some of the complex dynamic issues inherent in the delivery of ACT intervention, in respect of factors that relate to the practitioner, the client, and the interaction between them. The flexibility of ACT as an intervention allows for many different applications, and the ways in which its delivery impacts upon individual practitioners and clients will vary greatly.
