ABSTRACT

Relational Frame Theory suggests that human beings have an incredible ability when it comes to building relational networks between stimuli. A useful metaphor is to consider the human brain like a calculator without the ‘minus’ or ‘divide’ buttons. This is particularly relevant when intervening around thoughts because, whilst humans are able to inhibit behaviours with relative success, inhibiting thinking is extremely difficult. The discussion becomes more vital as people start to contemplate turning up the volume on meaning and purpose, rather than simply turning down the volume on other aspects of their life.
