ABSTRACT

Leapargil is the highest peak in the area and is the watershed between Tibet and Spiti valley. Spiti valley is desolate, barren in sharp contrast to south of Himalaya. Misty Spiti situated on trans-Himalayas treacherous ranges offers view of glorious sunrise and sunset on elusive giant peaks. Among the entire northern Indo—Tibetan border from Himachal Pradesh to Kumaon there live about more than 60,000 persons belonging to some distinct ethnic and cultural groups. They usually live in the trans-Himalayan valleys. The people of Dah-Hanu in northern Ladakh along Indus River are among those secluded groups who have retained some of the most primitive customs. Rezang la is situated in midway of Indian portion of Chang-than which stretches from Pangong lake to Hanley in trans-Ladakh plateau of mild slope situated at 15,000 ft height from mean sea level.
