ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 discusses the complex environment that managers and leaders need to face in interorganizational networks. While previous chapters have focused on the design, function, and structure of networks, this chapter discusses management and leadership in networks. It covers what differentiates network management from general management activities and behaviors and what makes network leadership unique. It also highlights how a multitude of factors can influence the behaviors of network management and leadership, including contextual factors, collaborative processes and structures, and network characteristics and governance structures. The chapter ends with a discussion of practical implications and introduces potential research questions for future study in network management and leadership.
