ABSTRACT

This chapter explores considerations of health and safety in science and design and technology. The specific issues discussed include: safety in the classroom; using equipment; testing designs; using household 'chemicals' and substances; heating and burning; electricity; using food; living things; and working outside. There will be someone responsible for first aid and a place where first aid materials are to be found at school. All adults must be aware of how first aid help can be found and of the school's health and safety policy. Children love making flying objects, such as kites, hot-air balloons and gliders. These can be hazardous if misused. There are some simple rules to follow, which help to ensure safety: fill hot-air balloons using a hair dryer - these can be flown indoors or outdoors; and Never fly any object near power cables or an electricity sub-station.
