ABSTRACT

This chapter considers how children can be helped to develop their technological skills. They are encouraged to develop skills in designing; skills in making, becoming more proficient in cutting, joining, folding, building and in using simple mechanisms, and in using materials and tools appropriately; and knowledge and understanding of mechanisms, structures, products and applications. From a very early age, children begin to learn about objects and how they work. Adults use their understanding of technology in everyday situations such as planning and preparing meals, planning and carrying out DIY projects at home, and enjoying hobbies including model-making, sewing and knitting all of these involve adults in using technological skills and processes. In today's society we all, children and adults, use modern technological advances. Today's society is a technological one; the study of design and technology in school helps children to understand and use technological skills and processes.
