ABSTRACT

This chapter provides details on a typical graduate program in marketing that consumer psychologists usually go through. Most consumer psychologists have a Ph.D. in Marketing because interest in consumers and consumption is most intense within Marketing departments in business schools. However, several consumer psychologists also come from the field of psychology and other areas. While the methodology courses may involve textbooks, the substantive courses such as Consumer Behavior and Judgment and Decision Making usually entail reading papers from the top journals in the field. In addition to understanding the substantive issues relating to consumer decision making, it is also important to understand the methodologies used to study consumer psychology. The journals most likely to be outlets for consumer psychology research, and which are listed in the UT Dallas ranking are the Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing, and Journal of Marketing Research.
