ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a short account of research team histories and salient features. The wool textile industry is one of the oldest industries in Britain. In the fifteenth century the main areas of production were in Somerset, Gloucestershire, Suffolk and Yorkshire. In terms of the value of output and exports wool textiles was the most important industry included in the study. British shipbuilding is another industry which gained world predominance between 1850 and 1914 when the British merchant fleet carried a large proportion of the world's deep-sea cargoes and British builders produced as much as 80 per cent of world tonnage. The early growth of the industry was largely in the development of radio and television while more recently it has been in navigational equipment, scientific instruments and the application of electronics to industry and commerce. Domestic electrical appliance products form part of the output of the electrical and allied engineering industry.
