ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the Rhizome Framework, a construct which proposes three potentially viable directions for the evolution of tradition craft – the expressive, prosumer and glocal – through craft-design collaboration. Rhizome Framework outlines potential directions for craft-design collaboration aimed at connecting traditional craftspeople in the developing world to viable markets. The framework is underpinned by a systemic perspective, and therefore offers more than one potential direction for viable craft evolution. The first step in the framework is to create a physical library of products – a product-library. This product-library will function as a cultural repository of the aesthetics, products, techniques and contexts of the craft practice. The Rhizome Framework proposes the creation of a cultural repository of craft tradition and practice through the product-library workshop. The Rhizome Framework creates a cultural repository through the product-library workshop and the craft documentation linked to it.
