ABSTRACT

Terrorism has altered the way in which we navigate certain physical spaces, such as airports or public facilities, and it has forced us to confront the question of how much freedom we are willing to give up in the name of security. At the same time, terrorists have challenged us to think ahead about our vulnerabilities and about all of the ways an attack could happen. While a horrible aspect of modern life, terrorism has a creative aspect to it and fighting terrorism will require not just hardening certain systems, but also imagining the unimaginable in anticipation of where terrorists might strike next. This is a task for which architects are well suited and one that the profession has an ethical obligation to address.
