ABSTRACT

This chapter presents extracts from nineteenth-century fiction and non-fiction texts, arranged by theme, and with accompanying notes, comprehension questions and lesson ideas. The extracts have been carefully chosen to be of interest to secondary-aged students in their subject matter, as well as to reflect the difficulty level and length students can expect when tackling unseen texts in public examinations. These extracts can be used as exam practice for unseen texts, as an accompaniment to teaching nineteenth-century fiction in order to provide a wider sense of context, as part of thematic units on the media or particular fictional genres to widen students’ exposure to nineteenth-century language, or as the basis of creative writing activities.
