ABSTRACT

Working actively with photography reinvigorates consciousness and critical practices as we make and use photography in landscape architecture. This essay systematically articulates a series of approaches to cultivate active, rigorous and conscious photographic engagement. These methods are accessible and applicative to every day practices within the discipline. Active ways of making photographs are presented alongside active practices in looking. This critical approach reinvigorates the viewer’s responsibilities to assess information and engage in the process of photography with a thoughtful mindset. The condition that landscape architects are excellent investigators when making and viewing photography is discussed further in this essay.
