ABSTRACT

Films can be used in the classroom as a complement to print literature. Films should also be studied and enjoyed as a literary form in their own right. As a form of popular media, films are especially useful as a reflection of contemporary society, including youth culture. This chapter explores the role of film in the literature classroom, beginning with concepts that students need to understand in order to analyze and discuss films. Next, the chapter identifies specific ways to compare fiction films with print literature in order to understand elements and themes that are common to all literary forms, and documentary or nonfiction films are described. Films are explored from a critical literacy perspective that acknowledges both the cultural impact of films and the social forces that influence filmmaking. Next, ways for students to develop appreciation for films and to share their opinions beyond the classroom are discussed. Suggestions for incorporating film into the classroom are given throughout the chapter, with additional teaching ideas described at its end.
