ABSTRACT

Novels have long been the best-selling form of literature for both adults and young adults. Nevertheless, poetry, short stories, and drama also present themes that are important in the lives of young people, and each of these forms provides unique opportunities for teaching and learning about literature. This chapter begins with a discussion of poetry in the classroom and the wide range of contemporary poetry available for young adults. Next, we examine short stories and the many collections that have been published for young adult readers. Finally, we explore ways to use drama both in and out of the classroom. Throughout the chapter, we identify resources that help teachers locate and use poetry, short fiction, and drama in engaging ways.
