ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews research and history surrounding African American social movement and the various aesthetics, tactics, and platforms utilized to advance social change. The chapter begins with an historical account of social movements ranging from the Harlem Renaissance to the Civil Rights Movement and shifts into contemporary movements like Black Lives Matter and the use of Black Twitter to affect change, promote healing and community, and enforce accountability. We then review the digital approaches to social justice and the aesthetics of contemporary movements like Afrofuturism.
