ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 focuses on what may be categorized as “one-way conversations” – notably, popular websites and how we encounter (and interpret) them. Then, to explore “authority” and “authenticity” more directly, the chapter considers websites making such overt claims, and how they promote or assert their knowledge as authoritative and comprehensively true. There is a discussion of the role of images, and their role in our “consumption” of Hinduism online. It concludes with examples of misinformation or mischaracterization, as well as organizations which combat Hindu defamation.
