ABSTRACT

The concluding chapter is called “The saffron effect.” How do these discourses – across Hindu nationalist websites, manifestos, social media, news articles/comment sections – influence Hinduism abroad? This chapter will consider the global effects of online presentations of Hinduism, the role of Orientalism/Colonialism, and the reiteration of “Vedic” traditions among the diaspora Hindus or NRIs in the US. US-based Hindu nationalist groups, temples, and educational systems which reflect these online debates are examined. The book concludes with an in-depth look at an organization who is challenging such rhetoric.
