ABSTRACT

Information privacy has given rise to rules governing the collection and handling of personal data, such as credit information, and medical and government records. Data protection is a problem that arises where data is collected by government or business and there is a need to protect the individual records in that data from falling into the hands of third parties, either inadvertently or by force. Data protection is a key factor in building trust between business and customers. The rapid increase in consumer digital data held by businesses makes data security a topic of scrutiny among the public and policymakers. Interest in the right of privacy increased in the 1960s and 1970s with the advent of information technology. The need to protect the privacy of those who give their personal information to organisations has become big business. Big data experts predict that ‘The organisation of tomorrow will be built around data’ – its collection, distribution and automation, using artificial intelligence.
