ABSTRACT

A central concern in the process was the need to develop adaptable, flexible students who are capable of anticipating and responding to the changing world of the twenty-first century. This is a significant leitmotiv of this chapter. It is suggested that not only should these proposals be used flexibly but that, beyond this, greater flexibility of teaching and learning styles can be addressed in modular approaches and resource-based flexible learning. It was also suggested earlier that the need for developing adaptable and responsible students should have its parallel in the development of flexible organizations of delivery. Modular approaches can be used to organise the delivery of the cross-curricular themes in terms of the five approaches from the National Curriculum Council. With regard to teachers the move to flexible learning constitutes a major change in teaching styles. The strengths and weaknesses of each of the five modes of delivery outlined in the curriculum guidance documents were discussed.
