ABSTRACT

This study explores the internationalization of home-based businesses from an Indigenous context. In particular, we examine the influence of network ties and start-up financing as potential critical resources for the internationalization of home-based businesses. Using a representative sample of Indigenous businesses in Canada, we find that small business network positively influences the internationalization of home-based Indigenous businesses. When compared to other Indigenous businesses, small business network has a negative effect on internationalization. Indigenous lending is critical for the internationalization of home-based Indigenous businesses; however, business loans and family and friends’ loans/equity are significant for the internationalization of other Indigenous businesses. These findings contribute to the literature on home-based businesses.
