ABSTRACT
Research studies show that there is a correlation between fluency and comprehension. The components of fluency are rate, automaticity, accuracy, phrasing or prosody, and comprehension. Each of these components is explained. Formal and informal instruments teachers can use to assess student fluency are discussed, as well as the Common Core State Standards that relate to fluency. A section is devoted to explaining appropriate activities for English learners. The Assessment section explains informal and formal assessments teachers can use to monitor students’ fluency growth. The Intervention section describes individual and small-group activities to increase students’ fluency. The Technology section lists apps and websites that teachers can use to develop students’ fluency skills. The chapter begins and ends with two different classroom scenarios, with guiding and reflective questions that can be used for classroom discussions.
