ABSTRACT

This chapter traces Blake’s progress as he made the transition from the exoteric to the esoteric mode of thought. In the prose works (There is No Natural Religion, All Religions are One and The Marriage of Heaven and Hell) he exposed the theoretical limitations of using the material laws as foundational principles. Then, on a parallel track, he used the poetic texts (Tiriel, The Book of Thel, Visions of the Daughters of Albion and America a Prophecy) as the artistic canvas on which to implement the theory, ultimately to choose the esoteric characteristics as his own foundational principles.
