ABSTRACT

Considerable misapprehension still seems to exist as to the work of, and necessity for, the Travelling Post Office. The general idea in the public mind seems to be that it is merely an office for the receipt of letters at the places through which it passes and for their delivery at the points on the railway nearest to the places of destination. The want of proper accommodation is being most severely felt, the executive branches having to work in premises which are utterly inadequate for their requirements; but it is satisfactory to know that, at last, the representations made by this Department in the matter, have met with success; and that, in due course, the Metropolis of this Colony will have a General Post Office worthy of the name, wherein the postal and telegraph duties can be discharged in a more satisfactory manner than they necessarily have to be performed under the existing serious disadvantages.
