ABSTRACT

This chapter contains reports of Messrs Fitzgerald and Wm. J. Mercer to Colonial Office and response of Colonial Office to Messrs Fitzgerald and Mercer. Having closely watched the progress of the several territories, the impediments that restrain, and the aids that would impel it to results beneficial at the same time to the merchant and trader, the population at large, and the public revenue, Fitzgerald and Mercer have brought the subject of railways in the Gold Coast Colony under special notice, with the view of obtaining from Her Majesty’s Government the necessary concession for constructing these railways. Enclosures containing the details of the proposed light railways and draft memorandum of terms and conditions of concession for light railways are presented.
