ABSTRACT

Sex and porn addiction thrives in secrecy and shame and that’s why connecting with others is so critical in establishing recovery. Using attachment theory and Erskine’s 8 Relational Needs, readers are encouraged to consider their attachment style and also consider what needs are currently being met and which they need to develop. This chapter highlights the many different types of relationships and communities that can support addiction recovery, from couple relationships and family, to friendships and recovery communities. The role of therapeutic groups and 12-Steps fellowships is given prominence in this chapter as so many have found a lifetime of recovery by sharing their struggles, and their triumphs, within a compassionate, supportive and accountable community.
